Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today (March 25, 2026) is Opening Day (rather, night) for Major League Baseball. The traditional full slate of first games will be held tomorrow, but tonight is a non-traditional start to the MLB season with a night game only on Netflix, where you usually just watch movies.

My recommendation for a movie on Opening … uh, night, is the classic comedy “Major League” that offers Bob Ueker’s iconic line, “… just a bit outside” when a pitch is so far off the mark it hits the backstop. “Major League” is a true celebration of baseball, not because it so honors America’s Pastime, but because it celebrates everything good in the sport and those things that seek to undermine it.
“Major League,” which premiered in 1989, is defined by it’s characters, which are mostly stereotypes, but so well performed that they became almost instant icons:
-

A promotional still photograph from the movie “Major League.” “Wild Thing,” the young out-of-control pitcher, played by Charlie Sheen
- The aging pitcher who puts snot on the ball, played by Chelcie Ross
- The veteran catcher who knows everything and has bad knees, played to perfection by Tom Berenger
- The highest-paid player, who’s OK but not the best player, played by Corbin Bernsen
- The young base-stealer who connives and then runs his way onto the team, played by Wesley Snipes
-

A promotional still photograph from the movie “Major League.” “Pedro Cerrano” is the vodu (you’d spell it voodoo) practicing mass of muscle who can’t hit a curveball and is calling the god “Jobu” to help him, played by Dennis Haysbert
- The gruff manager “Lou Brown,” who brings it all together, played by James Gammon
You know “Major League,” so don’t go looking for “Bull Durham” from 1988 (certainly a much better film at the heart of baseball, but you’d have to suffer watching political chowderheads Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins and try to keep your lunch or dinner down), or “Field of Dreams” also from 1989 and its metaphysical qualities that are better suited to another day on the baseball calendar.
“Major League” and its comedy and basic insouciance to life is the choice for discriminating baseball fans today.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Major League.” It is available on streaming services. Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Major League!”
