Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today, I’m going back to 1979 for “French Postcards,” which isn’t something folks used to purchase via mail order and it arrive in an “unmarked” package! “French Postcards” is a coming-of-age story of a group of college students from the U.S. and their year studying in Paris.

“French Postcards” has an ensemble cast of young actors from Blanche Baker to Debra Winger to David Marshall Grant to Miles Chapin. On the French side, you get veteran character actor Jean Rochefort and Marie-France Pisier as the husband and wife team that runs the college program and whose marriage is on shaky ground.
Interestingly, the husband-and-wife team of Willard Huyck and the late Gloria Katz, who collaborated on the screenplays for “American Graffiti” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” were the co-writers of “French Postcards” and Huyck directed the film.

The “postcards” part of the title is from the series of postcards sent home by Baker, who initially believed her boyfriend was going on the year-abroad adventure, but he stayed home. Still, Baker tries to visit all 212 notable sights in Paris from a famous guidebook.
Along the way you get what you easily see coming: the “nerd” who comes out of his shell through a French girlfriend (no pun intended from the final scene with escargot); the “worldly wise” guy who winds up with the headmaster’s wife; to the free-spirit who enjoys doing everything.
I didn’t see “French Postcards” in a theater, I saw it first on HBO in 1981. It wasn’t the kind of flick I’d normally believe I’d enjoy, but I caught it on the cable channel late one night (actually a really early morning) and it instantly became one of my favorite “little-remembered” flicks.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and you can easily find “French Postcards,” but you’ll have to rent or purchase via one of several streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “French Postcards.”
