Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today, I’m switching gears and diving into the genre of tee-vee miniseries with “Noble House” that stars Pierce Brosnan, Deborah Raffin and Ben Masters. While not a movie, “Noble House” offers a large, solid cast and solid storytelling.

“Noble House” is based on a best-selling novel of the same name by the late James Clavell. It is part of Clavell’s “Asian Saga” and is focused on Hong Kong. However, unlike the novel, which is set in 1963, the miniseries was modernized to the late 1980s with China about to reclaim the island that was once a colony of the British empire.
The underlying story of “Noble House” is business and a conglomerate from the United States looking to expand into Asia. Brosnan is the “tai-pan” or CEO of the Noble House, as “Struan & Company” is nicknamed (in real life, the company is Jardines) and he’s got his hands full with the aggressive nature of the Americans, led by Masters and Raffin; a kidnapping; and treachery from within and without.

Brosnan, as “Ian Struan Dunross,” must navigate his “Noble House” through both modern business and the ancient culture of China, but he’s been prepared for the former in education and experience and the latter through his life having been led in Hong Kong and across Asia.
“Noble House” is solid and entertaining, but it isn’t quite up to par with the most popular miniseries from a Clavell novel: “Shogun.” Thankfully, the actor John Rhys-Davies is in both miniseries and in “Noble House” he plays Brosnan’s nemesis “Quillian Gornt.” Elsewhere in the cast you’ll find veteran character actor Gordon Jackson, Denholm Elliott, Julia Nickson and Tia Carrere (she was 21 at the time and plays kept-woman “Venus Poon”).
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” or at least your big-screen teevee and watch “Noble House.” It’s available on a variety of streaming platforms. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Noble House.”
