Every April 25 offers “License Plate Day” in the U.S. You know, those metal rectangles on the back of your vehicle (in some states on both front and back bumpers). Today, many folks express themselves through their license plate! License Plate Day
celebrates the first seen in 1901 and were made by vehicle owners. The state of New York required owners of vehicles to put their initials on the back starting in 1901 and two years later required a state-issued plate (also called a vehicle registration plate
or, as sometimes called, a license tag). Some accounts say Massachusetts was the first state to require a license plate beginning in 1903 (the same year New York began requiring one for each vehicle). By 1918, all states required a license plate on vehicles. The large photo at the top of this page was taken near our home here in Naples, Fla., in December 2024. So, it shouldn’t be difficult to see a license plate today!
