U.S. flags were supposed to be flown at half-staff today (Sunday, May 3, 2026) in observance of national Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day. The Sunday observance concludes a weekend of events to honor those firefighters who have died on duty. According to internet sources: “… the official National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day (is) on Sunday, May 3. This annual weekend honors firefighters who died in the line of duty, featuring ceremonies in Emmitsburg, Maryland, the lowering of U.S. flags, and “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters …” I got this shot of the U.S. flag flying at half-staff at the Headquarters branch of the Collier County Public Library today (May 3, 2026), which is near our home here in Naples, Fla. BTW … there is a protocol for the “official” flying of U.S. flags … and it begins with a presidential decree. Remember, too, that traditionally, half-staff is for land-based flagpoles, while half-mast is aboard U.S.-chartered ships.
