Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today is May 8, 2026, and each May 8 is the anniversary from the formal surrender of Nazi Germany in World War II to the U.S. and Allied forces in Europe in 1945. So, it is called “Victory in Europe Day” and most commonly called “VE Day.”

So, on this May 8, 2026, let’s remember the history and watch the WWII flick “The Big Red One.”
The movie is about the historic 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. army that fought on WWII battlefields from North Africa, Sicily (called Operation Husky), to D-Day in France (Operation Neptune) and, finally, on to the liberation of a concentration camp at the end of the war.

“The Big Red One” is an epic war film of nearly two hours long (technically, 113 minutes) with a large cast that includes Lee Marvin (the top of the billing), Mark Hamill and Robert Carradine. “The Big Red One” is burdened by near-fatal wounds from stereotypes including the weak soldier who toughens up at the end to the embarrassing scene of the squad delivering a baby … in a tank. Yes, a tank.
However, “The Big Red One” is watchable and I’m just being critical of the overall quality of the film. A trivia note: the writer/director (Samuel Fuller) served with the actual 1st Infantry Division and was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service.
Too bad his experience couldn’t translate better into a film.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Big Red One” on this VE Day 2026. “The Big Red One” is available to stream on a limited number of services and is available to rent on others. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “The Big Red One.”
