In honoring the fallen in our nation’s military on this Memorial Day 2026, I’m posting today’s photo of the U.S. flag at half-staff. By presidential decree, U.S. flags are supposed to be flown at half-staff (at half-mast aboard vessels) on this solemn day of remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
In addition to the U.S. flags placed on graves of the fallen and ceremonies (often at cemeteries), you can honor the fallen through cinema by watching a film!
I took this photo of the U.S. flag flying at half-staff at the Headquarters branch of the Collier County Public Library this morning. Also, here are some links about Memorial Day:
- The history of Memorial Day, which many still call “Decoration Day”
- The history of Memorial Day from the Department of Veterans Affairs
- The history of Memorial Day from History.com
- “Memorial Day: A commemoration” from the National Archives
Here are the links to all the war-centric films that I’ve reviewed for my blog that have the United States at the center of the story. There are a couple of films that have a comedy component, but I’m including them because of their dramatic contribution and in no way making war or Memorial Day a laughing matter (just as I’m including fictional as well as one sci-fi movie involving World War II):
VIETNAM
‘Full Metal Jacket’
COLD WAR
‘The Bedford Incident’
SCI-FI
‘The Final Countdown’
WORLD WAR II:
