Ticket to the Movies: ‘Magnum Force’ is a very solid sequel to ‘Dirty Harry’

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s keep on the Clint Eastwood track today with “Magnum Force,” which was the first sequel to his iconic classic “Dirty Harry.” “Magnum Force” has a better supporting cast with Hal Holbrook, David Soul, Tim Matheson, Robert Ulrich, Kip Niven and, in a brief, uncredited appearance (no pun intended since she went topless), was Suzanne Somers!

With “Magnum Force,” Eastwood’s character surprises audiences with the philosophy that too much law enforcement (specifically when authorities become judge, jury and executioner) isn’t good for our country. His philosophy comes out as he uncovers a series of murders in which cops are killing off bad guys – which, of course, leads to them wanted to kill Clint.

“Magnum Force” is a very solid motion picture with excellent work by everyone in the cast from an old friend of Eastwood to his new partner to the young cops making up the assassination squad (Soul, Niven, Ulrich, Matheson) to the veteran character actor Holbrook.

Just like in the other “Dirty Harry” flicks, “Magnum Force” from 1973 has excellent action that more conventional violence than the super-gory, super blood-soaked and super-detailed scenes fueled by CGI and computers today.

“Magnum Force” is one of the few sequels that rivals the original in quality. However, after “Magnum Force,” the rest of the “Dirty Harry” franchise is just a hot mess.

BTW, trivia note … Somers was in her fifth film with “Magnum Force” after the first in “Bullitt” with Steve McQueen (also uncredited) and the next after being the legendary blonde who flirts with Richard Dreyfuss in “American Graffiti.”  Of those five films, her character was named and she credited only in only one … in “American Graffiti” as “Blonde in T-Bird.”

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Magnum Force.” It is available on a couple of subscription services and available to rent on some other streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Magnum Force.”
