Here’s what I believe is a brown basilisk, which was getting some sun on our driveway when I returned home from an errand this morning (Thursday, May 28, 2026). The brown basilisk is a lizard but sometimes called an iguana and commonly called the “Jesus Christ Lizard” because it can “walk on water” through its unique physique. From the internet: “When they need to escape a predator, they can sprint on their hind legs across the water’s surface for short distances, using specialized flaps of skin on their toes to trap air bubbles underneath their feet.” Although aggressive in appearance, the lizard typically flees from humans and has a diet of insects or even small lizards. The brown basilisk is an invasive species in Florida. I took this photo with my iPhone at our home here in Naples, Fla.
