Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s get back on comedic ground today with “Just Go With It” starring Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Nick Swardson and musician-turned-actor Dave Matthews.
I know that Sandler, while massively popular with audiences, is a polarizing figure on the big screen – you either love his work and plan never to see one of his efforts again. However, “Just Go With It” is a simply wonderful film from beginning to end and has more than a few endearing moments.
The surprise with “Just Go With It” isn’t that Sandler is funny with his own special insouciance, but that you get to see surprisingly good work in a “Sandler film” from talents such as Aniston and Kidman. In fact, Kidman does more with this small role than most actors accomplish in five films.
The scene near the end of the film where Kidman and Aniston “get real” is worth the price of admission to “Just Go With It.”
In “Just Go With It,” you get Sandler as a once-spurned plastic surgeon (he’s better looking now than with his ship’s prow of a nose when he was younger) who wants a relationship with the stunningly beautiful Brooklyn Decker. However, he needs to “borrow” single-mom Aniston and her two children to round out his “family” as a former wife and kids who he loves.
The comedy moves to Hawaii for the Sandler-Decker wedding, but it’s complicated not just by Aniston being invited along with the children, but them running into Kidman, who was Aniston’s nemesis in college – a woman so nasty that Aniston named her kids’ bowel movements after her (“Devlins,” as they are called).
Along the way, you the obligatory bikini shots where Aniston stacks up well against Decker (no pun intended and Jennifer is 18 years older than Brooklyn), but it is the story and actors’ talent that elevate this one to “don’t miss it” status.
You’ll find the usual assortment of oddities from a Sandler movie from him posing with the children to show how “committed” he is to them to Matthews’ creepy move in a dance/entertainment competition at the resort in Hawaii where he picks up a coconut with his butt cheeks! Remember, “Just Go With It” is a comedy, not Olivier at the National Theatre.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Just Go With It.” It is available on a couple of streaming services and also available on several subscription TV services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Just Go With It.”
