Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for today, let’s take a look at the underrated comedy-drama “Mr. Woodcock” from 2007 with a showcase performance by Billy Bob Thornton and supporting help from Seann William Scott and Ethan Suplee.

“Mr. Woodcock” is the story of a former nerd (Scott) who becomes a self-help guru who has to go home when his mother is going to be honored during her hometown’s (and therefore his former hometown) annual festival. Just one problem: She’s dating the quietly pedantic and somewhat maniacal “Jasper Woodcock,” played by Thornton.

Thornton as “Mr. Woodcock” was Scott’s nemesis in school and still torments students in his physical ed class and even appears to torment senior citizens he’s working with at an assisted living facility. Add to this mix that Scott has attained national success and Thornton is a know-it-all who is pretty much always correct and you get a volatile brew.

Toss in Suplee as Scott’s former best friend, who gives Scott bad information and incompetent assistance in trying to take down Thornton and you find “Mr. Woodcock” has stereotypes (such as Scott having to hide under his mother’s bed and then she winds up having sex with Thornton above him), but one that overcomes any hurdles because of the actors’ work.

PS: I’ve not mentioned that the actor playing Scott’s mother in “Mr. Woodcock” is Susan Sarandon because I’ve never been impressed by her marginal talent and always put off by her strident politics.

Of course, all works out well and near the end is a totally hilarious scene with Thornton on a gurney (watch the film, the context is there) being pushed by Scott and “Mr. Woodcock” dishes out criticism to individual members as the gurney weaves through a high school marching band during the town festival parade.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Mr. Woodcock.” It is available to rent on a variety of streaming services. Don’t worry, despite its stinkiness, you’ll thank me later for “Mr. Woodcock.”
