Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s dial up the energy today with the 1981 action flick “Nighthawks” starring Sylvester Stallone, Billy Dee Williams, Rutger Hauer and Lindsay Wagner. You also get excellent supporting work from Nigel Davenport and Persis Khambatta.

“Nighthawks” is the story of two of New York City’s undercover specialists (partners Stallone and Williams) who get drafted unwillingly into a federal-state task force that is set up to combat terrorism. Well, the terrorism comes from “Wulfgar,” who is played to perfection by Hauer and he’s aided and abetted by a just-as-deadly terrorist played also to perfection by Khambatta.

While you are getting some scenes in “Nighthawks” showing Stallone and Williams combating crime against the typical New York City nighttime lowlifes, you also learn about Hauer: He “botches” a bombing in London (how a terrorist botches a bombing when the bomb has exploded is a minor plot failure); he gets a new look from a plastic surgeon; and then winds up in New York to pull off a terrorist act that will re-establish him in the world of terrorism.

“Nighthawks” has a very straightforward attitude against terrorism (there’s no “warm fuzzies” when it comes to terrorists), but the movie has an intelligent plot that moves along smoothly to an ending you see coming from a mile away (but that’s not a cardinal sin in cinema, if it is done well – as “Nighthawks” accomplishes with aplomb).

Stallone got a credit for being one of “Nighthawks’” directors as he was in charge of a helicopter stunt scene after the film’s main director was not available on the day the scene was filmed!

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Nighthawks.” “Nighthawks” is available on several subscription platforms as well as to rent on other streaming services. Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later if you watch “Nighthawks.”
