Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s continue with some summer fun and the light-hearted romantic comedy “The Glass Bottom Boat” with ever-cheerful Doris Day and supported by a wonderful cast that includes Rod Taylor, Dick Martin, Paul Lynde, Arthur Godfrey and Dom DeLuise.
“The Glass Bottom Boat” is your stereotypical rom-com but with a then-high tech look: Doris works for a company whose boss has the secret “algorithm” that is crucial to the U.S. space program. Gadgets abound including a floor-cleaning robot that looks as if it were the model for the Roomba introduced 36 years after the premiere of the movie.
Doris and Rod “meet cute” in “The Glass Bottom Boat” via him fishing and hooking her mermaid costume while she swims in the ocean to entertain clients on her father’s glass-bottomed boat. Nice touch on the “meet cute!” As Doris works in public relations for Rod’s company, she’s assigned to write a puff-piece biography and becomes embroiled in espionage where the Russians are trying to steal the “algorithm” and paranoid U.S. security officials come out of the woodwork.
With “The Glass Bottom Boat,” you also get wonderful views of 1960 Americana from a house party where there’s a nice cameo by Robert “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” Vaughn in his “Napoleon Solo” persona and offers a few notes of that show’s theme song.
As with mostly all rom-coms, there’s peaks and valleys for our soon-to-be-happy couple, but the best thing about “The Glass Bottom Boat” is the quality of the comedy from the supporting cast from DeLuise’s slapstick to Martin’s dense obsequiousness to Lynde’s cross-dressing, disguise-wearing suspicious security official.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch the simply delightful “The Glass Bottom Boat.” It is available for rent via a variety of streaming services. Without any doubt, you will thank me later when you watch “The Glass Bottom Boat” today!
