Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s stay with a Burt Reynolds theme today with the sequel to “The Cannonball Run” that’s called “Cannonball Run II.” Yes, they dropped “the” in the title, along with whatever made the original watchable. While something might be bad (say, your aunt doing a “hula” at a family reunion), there’s bad and there’s terrible (say, watching your aunt be in a car crash). Sadly, “Cannonball Run II” is the latter.
Just like the original, “Cannonball Run II” has an expansive cast including Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Chan, Shirley MacLaine and Mr. Frank Sinatra, who would be in his last big-screen appearance (he did a tee-vee flick before his death in 1998, but this was his last big-screen film).
In any case, where the original was a bad movie being fun because the actors appeared to be having fun making a bad movie, “Cannonball Run II” is just another in a long line of sequels looking to cash in on the original. However, “Cannonball Run II’s” cast is impressive and also includes Marilu Henner, Telly Savalas, Foster Brooks, Sid Caesar, Tim Conway, Tony Danza and, yes, Charles Nelson Riley!
The star power is actually impressive with members of Hollywood’s infamous “Rat Pack” – highlighted by the Chairman of the Board (Sinatra), Martin, Davis and Shirley MacLaine. The day all were on the lot for filming drew quite a crowd, even by jaded Hollywood standards.
Just like the original, “Cannonball Run II” is a film in which you don’t have to know much about any plot: Reynolds and Dom DeLuise are again in the “unofficial” auto race from New York to coastal California. However, it is just a series of vignettes that showcase each of the actors or the actors in groups.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Cannonball Run II.” It is available for rent via a variety of streaming platforms. You will thank me later when you watch “Cannonball Run II” today!
