Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s turn back to the thriller/action-drama with the somewhat underrated “The Presidio” that stars Sean Connery, Mark Harmon and Meg Ryan. It also features a strong supporting cast with a wonderful job done by Jack Warden.
“The Presidio” is a murder thriller with nice action scenes set on what’s now a former military base in northern California – the name of the base is the title of the movie. The action begins with the murder of a military police officer on the base and a subsequent chase ends up in a fiery crash in nearby San Francisco.
Enter Connery as the by-the-book officer in charge of the military investigation and Harmon as a San Francisco police detective. Of course, the two have a history as Connery was once Harmon’s commanding officer and the two didn’t have a mutually satisfactory ending to Harmon’s military career.
Finally, enter Ryan as Connery’s daughter, who immediately becomes the focus of Harmon’s amorous attention. From there, the reason behind the initial murder and deaths unravels through Connery and Harmon doing an investigation – including a nice scene where Harmon socially engineers information by commenting on Connery being too straightlaced and stuck-up.
The end has its anticipated surprise ending that you might see coming, but it isn’t obvious.
I say “The Presidio” is underrated because it doesn’t get the attention of other such dramatic thrillers and it offers an excellent romantic component that’s a conflict for all three major characters. “The Presidio” easily holds your attention into the final credits and, despite the murder/action components, has an intelligent, layered plot that moves seamlessly along to the climax.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Presidio.” It is available on several subscription services and to rent on other streaming platforms. You will thank me later when you watch “The Presidio” today!
