A family member encountered this northern curly-tailed lizard (Leiocephalus carinatus) while at work yesterday (Monday, Aug. 3, 2026) in Lee County, north of our home here in Naples, Fla. Since some family members despise lizards, he decided to send this photo to our family group chat. At first glance, I thought it was a brown basilisk, which is commonly called the “Jesus Christ Lizard” because it can “walk on
water” (its can skitter across water because of the shape of its feet), but a check online showed it to be the northern curly-tailed lizard, which was introduced into Southeast Florida in the 1940s in an attempt to contain sugar cane field pests.
