Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, I’m gonna go back to 1979 when two interesting movies arrived about youth gangs in New York. While “The Warriors” got the most attention then and since, there is another and it is superior to the first: “The Wanderers.”
“The Wanderers” is about an Italian-American gang in a diverse high school in circa 1963. The group, led by Ken Wahl and featuring a nice strip-poker moment with Karen Allen that’s two years before she became an instant icon with “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and just a year after her breakthrough role in “National Lampoon’s Animal House.”
Although the story of “The Wanderers” centers on the gang, it actually focuses on the individual personalities from Wahl to other gang members and to their foes, who are managed on-screen to reveal individual personalities such as “Terror” of the “Fordham Baldies” to even the adult organized crime family supporting the gang and it is led by Dolph Sweet as “Chubby Galasso” and he has a wonderfully cruel moment teaching respect to some bowling hustlers.
“The Wanderers,” which took its name from the 1961 hit “The Wanderer” by Dion (whose birth name is Dion Francis DiMucci) winds up in a bad spot with a black gang and “Chubby” and his opposite number from the adults behind the black gang step in and force the gangs into a football game! OK, so you’ll have to bend your disbelief.
However, it is how “The Wanderers” plays out to a denouement showing the future of the key players from Wahl basically trapped in what is a conventional cage with the neighborhood/Mafia connection being “Chubby’s” future son-in-law to two other characters escaping nasty home environments and headed to a place far in the west.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Wanderers.” It is available on a variety of rental platforms. You will thank me later if you find it and watch “The Wanderers.”
