Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go back to the genre of espionage with the underrated thriller “The Fourth Protocol” starring Michael Caine, Pierce Brosnan, Joanna Cassidy and Ned Beatty. For espionage and low-key action, you’ll find this is one of the better such films.

“The Fourth Protocol” is about a Russian plan to destabilize a British election by staging a nuclear explosion at a U.S. airbase in that country. By detonating a small nuke, the Russkies figure it will push voters in the U.K. to elect a prime minister who will bend to the Russians’ will instead of being an ally of the U.S. (remember, the film takes place in the mid-1980s before Soviet Communism collapsed in the early 1990s).

Caine plays a British agent who uncovers the plot – the bombing attempt is a violation of a supposed “Fourth Protocol” in which governments agreed never to prepare such so-called “suitcase” weapons that could easily (or somewhat easily) be transported into any country.

The Russian agent responsible for collectiing all the pieces of the bomb that are being brought into the U.K. through a variety of transportation is played to perfection by Brosnan. The agent, a KGB specialist trained to be able to appear to be a British citizen, is cold and ruthless and is very good at his job.

“The Fourth Protocol” does a decent job of boiling down the best-seller of the same title by Frederick Forsyth and condenses several parts with impressive precision that takes just a few moments on screen to present what Forsyth wrote through dozens of pages in the novel.

The supporting cast is light, highlighted by Beatty as a Russian espionage officer and Cassidy as the Russian nuclear expert who arrives in the U.K. to assemble the components of the bomb.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Fourth Protocol.” It is available to rent on a very limited number of streaming platforms. You will thank me later, if you find and watch “The Fourth Protocol.”
