Ticket to the Movies: ‘Octopussy’ nothing but so-so as a ‘007’ effort

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s head back on the “007” highway with Roger Moore in “Octopussy” and it co-stars a milquetoast Maud Adams and the always suave Louis Jourdan as the baddest of bad guys.

Still, something’s missing with “Octopussy,” which has lowlights that press it far down the list of flicks in the “007” franchise. However, it’s still a “007” movie and you simply cannot bring yourself not to watch it.

With “Octopussy” you also get an excellent small turn by real-life professional tennis player Vijay Amritraj (who naturally plays “Vijay”) as a fellow spy with Moore and, in a lesser-recognized but certainly equal role as any bad guy’s sidekick in the franchise, Bollywood legend Kabir Bedi plays Jourdan’s almost literal hatchet man (what super-villain doesn’t have one?) to near-perfection.

“Octopussy” starts with the investigation into an art-theft ring that centers out of Moscow and involves Jourdan as its point man in Europe. Along the way Moore encounters a mysterious woman named “Octopussy” and she has an all-female crew that does bidding for her while she does bidding for Jourdan.

“Octopussy” has all the hallmarks of a “Bond” effort: International intrigue; international locales; exciting chases (from an airplane flying through a hangar to even one on auto rickshaws where Vijay uses a tennis racquet to fight off bad guys); and the usual assortment of quirky opponents to our hero.

In the end, though, something just doesn’t work out well for “Octopussy.”

It isn’t satisfying in the usual way you find the franchise; the plot is convoluted, but so are many Bondian films; and it just doesn’t really translate as well as even so-so “007” flicks present. Ah well, even in the world of “007,” there isn’t perfection in all examples of the art.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Octopussy.” It is available to rent on a variety of streaming platforms. You will thank me later, if you find and watch “Octopussy.”
