Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s check out “Boiler Room” with a young(ish) cast headlined by Giovanni Ribisi Vin Diesel and Nina Long. You’ll first remember the f-bomb fest called “The Wolf of Wall Street” and before that one, the stock market film everyone remembers is “Wall Street.” However, “Boiler Room” keeps up with both.
“Boiler Room” is about unethical stock trading and the different personalities that inhabit that sleazy side of non-Wall Street. However, “Boiler Room” doesn’t rely on the shock, vulgarity and f-bombs of “The Wolf of Wall Street,” but also doesn’t match the overall greatness of “Wall Street.”
What “Boiler Room” does is develop characters and doesn’t try to force too much, too soon on its audience and that’s a shining piece of admiration for any film from any year (“Boiler Room” was released in 2000).
Ribisi often plays a somewhat whiny person and you get that emotion with “Boiler Room,” be he also accomplishes more than just whiny. Of course, he’s rises the flotsam of the “boiler room” crew that includes Diesel and Ron Rifkin and even has Ben Affleck in a small role that makes no real sense for him to have accepted.
Both Diesel and Rifkin both get solid screen time and do solid work, but also like Affleck, Tom Everett Scott is just window dressing and it would have been better to give is on-screen time to Long.
The plot of “Boiler Room” is pretty standard, but even “pretty standard” can be done with a little verve and “Boiler Room” has some where so many other flicks are bereft of even a smidgen.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch the “Boiler Room.” It is available via a limited number of subscription services and is for rent on several streaming platforms. You will thank me later, if you find and watch “Boiler Room.”
