Ticket to the Movies: ‘T-34’ has typical war stereotypes, but watchable even though dubbed

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s head back to the era of World War II for a film from Russia about a legendary tank: “T-34.” The uninspired film title “T-34” is the designation of the Russian tank credited for helping defeat the Nazis in WWII.

“T-34” is a typical, stereotypically laden film about war that extols virtue on one side … in this case the Russians. It has the usual war-movie stereotypes found in military-type flicks from around the world, but it has excellent special effects of tank battles in the war.

“T-34” starts out with a Russian tank battling the advancing panzers of the German army. Ultimately, the tank commander is captured and sent into a POW camp. Later, he is pulled out to lead an upgraded Russian T-34 tank in a combat exercise against the latest German tank. Whew! Quite a story, but you’ll have to take it with a large grain of salt.

The film sets up a tank-fancier’s dream matchup of a T-34/85 variant and a German Panther tank. It’s all part of a mostly foolish, fantasy plot of pitting the T-34 against the Panther in a combat trial at the end, but the movie is actually watchable. However, remember that it is dubbed into English.

You won’t recognize any of the actors in “T-34,” but even with the dubbing, you will see that they do an acceptable job. I also reviewed another Russian film called “Tankers” about another legendary tank, the KV-1. It is similar to “T-34,” but more of a straightforward war flick with more battle scenes.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “T-34.” You can find it on a limited number of subscription platforms. You will thank me later, if you watch or re-watch “T-34.”
