While rummaging through a drawer at our home here in Naples, Fla., I came across this object. I didn’t remember ever having it before seeing it this past Tuesday (Oct. 27, 2026). I was puzzled. What is this? Its point appeared to be a ball-point pen, but it wasn’t. Well, Google AI noted: “This is a miniature wooden rowing oar souvenir from San Sebastián (known in Basque as Donostia), Spain. It represents the region’s strong maritime and competitive rowing heritage, specifically traditional Basque boat racing (traineras). Items like this are commonly sold as decorative keepsakes or keychains, featuring the town name and local motifs on the paddle blade.” Huh. I wonder how I wound up with a miniature Basque rowing oar? Well, the puzzle remains! (Remember: Click on the small image for a bigger version – then click on that one for the full-size photo.)
