Today marks the end of the 2020 Honda Classic pro-golf tournament. Well, back in the day (way, way back), it was Jackie Gleason’s Inverarry Classic. I photographed both the Gleason outside Fort Lauderdale and the Doral Open in Miami. Anyway … here’s a shot of golf’s greatest Jack Nicklaus, at left, and golf legend Lee Trevino as they shared a light moment at one of the two tournaments in either 1975 or 1977. Jack is simply golf’s best-ever (Tiger’s still coming up short) and Lee was the showman who backed it up with a champion’s game (and he had a cameo in Adam Sandler’s golf comedy “Happy Gilmore”). I recently bought a slide converter and I’m going through old photos and this one was not marked with a date. Still, here are two of the sport’s best-known figures of the time and as of the date of the posting of this blog entry, both men are 80. Sorry, but the photo is more than slightly out of focus, but I was shooting film and not digital at the time. I have purchased a slide converter and posting these “Way, Way Back” images and this is a scan from a 35mm Ektachrome slide taken with a Nikon F1 camera.
