RIP Sean Connery … remember the best-ever 007 for more than just ‘James Bond’

Instead of my usual “try this flick” feature today, I’m giving a cinematic salute to the most iconic “James Bond” … Sean Connery, who passed at 90, his family announced on Oct. 31, 2020. Connery, who passed in his sleep on Nassau in the Bahamas, defined the international spy whose franchise remains running strong today. The trio of “Dr. No,” “Goldfinger” and “Thunderball” came to define both the character and set the standard for the franchise. I also enjoyed his “007” turn in “Diamonds are Forever” (click here for my review).

However, Connery’s career was much more than “007.” I liked him best after “Bond, James Bond” in the thriller “The Presidio” (click here for my review) co-starring Mark Harmon and Meg Ryan. He was also solid in “The Hunt for Red October” (click here for my review) as well as “The Untouchables” and the lesser-remembered films “The Anderson Tapes,” “Family Business” and “The Man Who Would Be King.”

Also, don’t forget: the World War II ensemble cast classic “A Bridge Too Far” (click here for my review); the sci-fi classic “Highlander;” “The Russia House;” and in one of his best-ever turns on the big screen – as “Indiana Jones’” father in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” PS – he was also in “Time Bandits.”

Connery won an Oscar for “The Untouchables” and won two Golden Globes (and received a third for the body of his work) and nominated for three others. His Globes were for “The Untouchables” and “Last Crusade.” Also, Sean was not one of Hollywood’s micro-leading men at 5-feet-5 or so … he was 6-2 and his physical stature was a tall as his CV.

So, today, remember Sean by watching one of his films. One will be easy to find (try “Family Business” – you don’t remember it, but it was among his best and the cast is stellar with Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick and directed by Sidney Lumet)!

So, I’m doing a sometimes recommendation of a movie or TV show … and they’re all movies or TV shows that I’ve reviewed on this blog.
