Watch It! Today I’m giving an RIP salute to Gavin MacLeod, who passed yesterday (May 29, 2021) at 90. The salute comes because MacLeod made a salute his signature on TV’s kitschy “The Love Boat.” It is my all-time favorite TV show and MacLeod was the smooth, cool skipper who kept it all together on “The Love Boat.” However, I first enjoyed his work as the sidekick to World War II’s only hippie in “Kelly’s Heroes” with Clint Eastwood. The two roles couldn’t have been any more different, but he did a great job with both. In between the two, MacLeod notched his first iconic TV character: TV newswriter “Murray Slaughter” on the classic “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” You will also find him in a supporting role in the Cary Grant-Tony Curtis comedy “Operation Petticoat.” So, thanks to the now-late Mr. MacLeod for so many wonderful hours of entertainment. Oh, he earned five Golden Globe nominations (three for “The Love Boat” and two for “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”) and Gavin’s birth name was Allan George See and he was born in Mount Kisco, N.Y. So, get out there today and enjoy Gavin’s work … Watch It!
