Watch it! A movie today? ‘T-34’ shows any country’s war movies have stereotypes

Watch It! I became interested in “T-34” simply because I enjoy military tanks and their history. After all, “T-34” is just a Russian propaganda film that uses World War II as a frame: It’s dubbed; and has all the flaws of Western war movies; and a totally contrived, fantasy ending. Yet, I enjoyed “T-34” for both the acting (if you don’t mind dubbing) and the CGI that produces some of the best World War II tank action sequences you’ll ever see. “T-34” is the story of a young Russian tank commander who has the impossible task of stopping the initial German advance on Moscow early in WWII. He comes to lead a T-34/85 in a training session against German Panther tanks (they were originally the Panzer Mark V, but, in 1944, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler ordered it just designated as “Panther”). Ultimately, “T-34” (and stereotypically) has a showdown with the leading bad Nazi in a Panther — and this why this movie might be labeled “fantasy.” It’s just what a WWII tank aficionado would love: Watching a Panther vs T-34/85 showdown like high noon in a Western. It’s easy to find, so … Watch It!
