Watch It! “The Shootist” was John Wayne’s final turn on the big screen before his death of cancer in 1979. “The Shootist” is the story of an aging gunfighter who “comes to town” to die. Along his final days, Wayne has to deal with his mortality as well as his past catching up with him. “The Shootist” also has a young(ish) Ron Howard in a supporting turn, along with screen legend Lauren Bacall, who plays the boarding house lady who becomes Wayne’s love interest. In my opinion, “The Shootist” is Wayne’s best and, while a foretelling of the actor’s coming demise of a terminal disease, Wayne’s previous bout with cancer was in remission and did not return until the year that he died. “The Shootist” has somewhat wooden acting by other supporting actors, but is a must-see for Wayne fans and those who love westerns. So … Watch It!
