Looking on the big screen at your home today, there aren’t very many “great” films with bicycling as a theme, but you’ll totally enjoy “American Flyers.” Along with “Breaking Away” from six years earlier, “American Flyers” in 1985 is one of those films you never saw (or even heard about), but should watch as soon as possible. Despite being a “bicycle” film, “American Flyers” has a complex plot revolving around two brothers from a dysfunctional family in which potential tragedy brings them together. Toss in a superlative supporting cast, and “American Flyers” should win you over all too easily. A pre-superstar Kevin Costner headlines, but David Marshall Grant, Rae Dawn Chong and Alexandra Paul all do good work.
I’m not sure that you’ll be able to easily find “American Flyers,” but make the effort for your “big screen” at home!
