OK! It’s the season of Halloween 2022! I’m doing a countdown of my 17 favorite horror flicks that I’ve reviewed for my blog … and today’s finds us at No. 4: “Friday the 13th.” Here’s the flagship of one of the most profitable movie franchises in history, but the original isn’t really all that good. It has scary, gory parts … but it’s no “Halloween.”
“Friday the 13th” is credited for launching the character “Jason” on unsuspecting victims for many films to come, but you must remember that “Jason” isn’t the killer (**SPOILER ALERT FOR NO ONE**) in the original and he doesn’t wear his signature hockey mask until the second sequel.
Still, “Friday the 13th” is a lot of fun for horror fans and it even offers Kevin Bacon in his fourth feature film (after the first in “National Lampoon’s Animal House” … remember, “Thank you, sir, may I have another?”).
The only “name” star was Betsy Palmer, who said she took the part of “Jason Voorhees’” mother because they offered her enough money so she could buy a new car ($1,000-per-week for 10 weeks) and you won’t find anyone else worth watching in it besides Bacon.
Still, the original “Friday the 13th” is both legendary and iconic and spawned a franchise that made “Jason” one of the names in horror.
Check back tomorrow for No. 3 …
