OK! It’s the season of Halloween 2022! I’m doing a countdown of my 17 favorite horror flicks that I’ve reviewed for my blog … and today’s finds us at No. 2: “Scream.” It is ahead-by-a-mile the best horror effort out of Hollyweird in the nearly 26 years since its release on Dec. 18, 1996.
The horror genre in cinema was pretty much dead (pun intended) when legendary scarefest director Wes “A Nightmare on Elm Street” Craven dropped “Scream” on us. The moribund efforts in horror simply relied on gut-churning gore to “scare” moviegoers. That changed with “Scream.” From the first scene where the killer torments the first victim via telephone, you know you’re getting a prime cut from Craven (no pun intended).
Of course, there’s gore galore in “Scream” as well as all the stereotypical elements of high school kids being picked off one-by-one and slaughtered by a slasher who appears to have links to a past crime. “Scream” also offers an excellent cast including the film’s heroine played by Neve Campbell.
You’re not going to figure out everything about the killer in “Scream” (or didn’t the first time you saw it) since it is creative and filmmakers worked a bit harder to actually have a sensible timeline and plot in the film.
Just as other horror films spawned franchises, so has “Scream.” All the rest do not collectively add up to the greatness of the original (few do in dramatic or comedic cinema, many fewer in the horror arena) … so …
