I posted this photo two years ago as a “Way, way back” image. Back in the day, I shot photographs at the Doral Open (Miami) and Jackie Gleason Inverarry Classic (Fort Lauderdale) golf tournaments in South Florida. Today, the Inverarry Classic has evolved into the Honda Classic at a different course, but near the original layout. I’m watching the tourney today and wanted to post this photo of the signature star of the early tournaments: Jackie “The Great One” Gleason and he was greeting someone on the course during his tournament in 1977 when I got this shot. Jack Nicklaus, who is my favorite pro golfer of all time, won the Gleason even back-to-back in 1977 and 1978. I’m posting this during the end of the third round on Feb. 25, 2023. Finally, “The Great One” was also the iconic sheriff in “Smokey and the Bandit” with the late, great Burt Reynolds — plus, he wasn’t just “The Honeymooners” as he did solid drama, too, with “The Hustler.” Gleason died at 81 in 1987 in Fort Lauderdale of cancer.
