Today’s “must” movie is “A Very Brady Sequel” and it is for two reasons: First, to mark the passing of actor-comedian Richard Belzer, who has a very small part in the film; and, second, because it did a wonderful job in extending the “Brady” story into a second motion picture that is more than worth your time (especially if you know the “Bradys” from the TV show).
Belzer passed Feb. 19, 2023, at the age of 78 and he had a long career and is probably best known outside of stand-up comedy circles for his work on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (he also did four episodes as the same character on the original “Law & Order”) as for his comedy efforts. Belzer has a brief part in “A Very Brady Sequel” as a sharp-tongued detective who helps the “Bradys” uncover the truth about a conman who has gained their trust. Belzer was also in “Bonfire of the Vanities” as well as the awful “Fletch Lives.” He was in “Night Shift” and, you’ll need to look close, but he was the MC at the club in “Scarface” with Al Pacino.
As for the film, well, you gotta love the “Bradys.” Both movies capture the family to pretty much mocking perfection and the sequel expands the canvas of using classic “Brady” episode plots (such as their trip to Hawaii). You’ll need to have some appreciation for the TV show to completely enjoy the film.
Make sure you go out of your way to watch “A Very Brady Sequel.” You won’t be disappointed if you watch it … I guarantee it!
