Today’s “must” movie is “Rough Cut” starring Burt Reynolds. “Rough Cut” is one of Burt’s lesser-remembered films. It was a bomb with critics but placed 41st at the U.S. box office in 1980. It is Burt being typically Burt, but with the more-than-able supporting cast of Lesley-Anne Down and screen legend David Niven.
“Rough Cut” is the story of Burt as “Jack Rhodes,” who’s an American ex-pat living in London as a successful restauranteur … and being one of the world’s top diamond thieves. Niven is the Scotland Yard inspector who is retiring and wants a final, big bust to round out his career. All proceeds well until you find out at the end that … well, you should have figured it out much earlier in the film.
The most interesting back-story to “Rough Cut” is that Larry Gelbart of TV’s “M*A*S*H” fame, hated the final cut so much he had his name taken off. Instead, you’ll find one of his “M*A*S*H” characters’ names as the screenwriter: “Francis Burns.” Oh, you’ll remember that character best as the nebbish “Maj. Frank Burns.”
“Rough Cut’s” original director was fired and then rehired after the producer didn’t like the work of the second director and then a third was brought in to shoot some final secondary scenes. Whew!
Still, it’s a Burt flick and you should make sure to find and watch “Rough Cut.” You won’t be disappointed if you watch it … I guarantee it!
