Today’s “must” movie is “Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?” Here’s another of the whodunits from the late ’70s that is worth watching today, but is difficult to find either streaming or on disk (it is available on DVD, but, for some odd reason, not Blu-Ray). In any case, here’s one worth every minute of your time.
“Who is Killing …” is the story of the murders of a bunch of celebrity chefs and the story stretches from London to Europe and back to London. “Who is Killing …” has a wonderful cast that does wonderful work. Headlining the film are Jacqueline Bissett as a celebrity pastry chef; George Segal as a brassy American who is the former husband of Bissett; and the always wonderful Robert Morley as the morbidly obese editor of a cuisine magazine and who makes or breaks chefs’ careers.
You get dark comedy with this one and, while it’s not too much slapstick (until you see Segal getting confused about how the UK assigns floor numbers on a building’s level and creates havoc at a television recording building), “Who is Killing …” has wit based in sarcasm and so this qualifies as a comedy.
So, go today and try to find and watch “Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe.” Or, as they titled it outside the U.S., “Too Many Chefs.” You won’t be disappointed if you watch it … I guarantee it!
