Today’s “must” movie is a movie about basketball called “Blue Chips.” It is directed by an Oscar winner; it has the top-notch acting tandem of Nick Nolte and Mary McDonnell; and, most importantly, it has Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal and Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway in supporting roles as high-priced recruits.
“Blue Chips” is the story of Nolte, who is a coach on the downside of his career: He’s ethical and honest and won’t allow cheating to pay players to be on his team (remember, it was 1994 when such things happened on a daily basis, but were not legal and out in the open as they are in these NIL days (Name, Image, Likeness for those unfamiliar with paying teenagers to play college sports today).
In any case, Nolte comes off his first losing season as a head coach and finds himself caving into his own and outside pressure to build an immediate winner through dollar bills (or, at least one tractor to a farm boy’s father).
You’ll enjoy the most watching the fleshing out of Shaq’s character in “Blue Chips,” while the rest of the cast’s characters’ backstories are pretty much conventional.
Although it is now Stanley Cup playoff season in ice hockey and the as-usual tepid thing called NBA basketball playoffs, I haven’t reviewed an ice hockey movie and you’ll have to get by with this one about hoops.
“Blue Chips” will be easy for you to find on a streaming service and that means you need to find it today. You’ll enjoy it. I guarantee it!
