Today’s “must” movie is “Adventures in Babysitting.” OK, this one’s a teen flick, but has Chris Columbus in his debut as a director. “Adventures” is the story of just about the toughest night of babysitting ever: From a backstabbing boyfriend to noir to get the car fixed to saving a friend at a downtown Chicago bus station to escaping from mobsters … well, whew! You don’t f*)^ with the babysitter!
Elisabeth Shue is the headliner here and she was much more age-appropriate to the role than many in Hollywood over the years playing a teenager (she was 23, while, in just two other examples, Olivia Newton-John was 29 and Lorna Luft was 31 playing high schools in “Grease” and its sequel). Plus, Shue is a talented actress and would go on to an Oscar nomination for the exceptionally dark “Leaving Las Vegas” with Nic Cage. Shue should have won over the exceptionally overrated Susan Sarandon, but you know Hollyweird … (there’s absolutely no question Shue should have won, but Sarandon had and still has the politics).
OK, back to “Adventures” … the kids are on the run; the bad guys can’t sing as good as the kids in the blues club (a really neat “improvised” song with the late Albert Collins) and can’t climb up a skyscraper as well (see, I told you, a teen flick).
After Shue in “Adventures,” I liked the work of Calvin Levels in a supporting role as the crook-with-a-heart (and more than a little decency). He should have had a much longer career in Hollywood and was a Tony award nominee for his work on Broadway.
All-in-all, “Adventures in Babysitting” is a tremendously fun movie. Find it. You’ll enjoy it. I guarantee it!
