Today’s “must” movie is “TAG: The Assassination Game.” Here’s of the few films in just about the smallest genre of film out of Hollywood – about a game on school campuses where there’s an elimination tournament through “kills” with a paintball gun, a toy gun that shoots plastic darts or a squirt gun.
“TAG” is the most true-to-the-game films of the three that I’ve reviewed. It shows the competition … and that gets out of hand with one player turning to real weapons to win the game. Of course, the concept is ludicrous today – what would you get if you played a game where you chased someone on a college campus with a paintball gun or toy gun? It’d be a jail that you’d be seeing next (or a mental ward).
In “TAG,” you have a quietly competent cast with Robert Carradine, Linda Hamilton and Kristine DeBell. Carradine is the editor of the college’s newspaper and he has noir bent and want to find out what’s going on. Once the real killing begins, he’s in high gear. With “TAG,” you’ll get a paper-thin cast of supporting actors, but the film is OK to watch throughout.
The other films about this game are “Gotcha!” with Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino; and the underrated comedy you never saw called “Big Trouble,” with Tim Allen and Rene Russo. “Gotcha!” is supposed to be about the game, but becomes more of an espionage film, while “Big Trouble” uses the “killer” game as an adjunct to pull all the principal characters together and that’s much less than in “Gotcha!”
In any case, “TAG: The Assassination Game” is a watchable movie. If you can find it, you’ll enjoy it. I guarantee it!
