The setting sun’s rays cast a warm light on the “Endless Summer” license tag of this vehicle on May 9, 2023, as I drove home from work here in Naples, Fla. As a native of south Florida, I’ve always thought about my home state more in terms of golf, scuba diving, fishing and water skiing, but we do have our surfers. In any case, the “Endless Summer” plate supports beach preservation (although Floridians lose more miles of beach each year as “private” property rights are expanded under poorly-motivated reasoning). Ah, well. For those who don’t remember, “The Endless Summer” is a legendary and classic surfing film from 1965 about surfers spending an “endless summer” in search of the perfect wave across the globe. Well, here in Florida, “official” summer comes next month in June along with the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Ah well, hurricanes do bring better waves! Oh, and remember to watch two classic “surfer” flicks (… actually, no real surfers ever watch or watched them): “Beach Party” and the generation-later sequel “Back to the Beach” – both with Frankie Avalon and Anette Funicello. As always, I’ve removed the license tag number and letters as a courtesy to the owner of the vehicle.
