Today’s ‘must see’ movie: ‘Vanishing Point’ from ’71 makes you actually have to examine …

Today’s “must” movie is “Vanishing Point” from 1971. Here’s a very interesting car-chase flick that actually makes you consider philosophical issues over which CGI disaster that Vin Diesel is being faked at overcoming. “Vanishing Point” was released just about four years after Diesel was born (BTW … his birth name is the relatively calm Mark Sinclair … not so “furious,” huh?) and “Vanishing Point” stars Barry Newman as the anti-hero of the day.

The story of “Vanishing Point” is direct: Newman is driving a 440-cublic-inch muscle car (a Dodge Challenger) from Denver to San Francisco and becomes part of a multi-state chase that is the axis of you having to decide what is the motivation you see from virtually every character in the film.

I won’t do a spoiler alert about “Vanishing Point,” but I will tell you that even the director and actors each have their own ideas about the motivation of the character of “Kowalski,” who is a Medal-of-Honor winner from the Vietnam war to his work as a police officer and a racer. He was disappointed in each.

It is the philosophical component of the film established at the beginning (
Why is he doing this?”) that makes “Vanishing Point” more than worth your effort to watch. Plus, you get the wonderful Cleavon Little as “Super Soul,” the blind DJ who becomes Newman’s spiritual partner. Three years later, Little would headline and become a “name” star with Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles.”

Make sure that you watch “Vanishing Point” … you’ll enjoy it. I guarantee it!
