Today’s ‘must see’ movie: ‘WarGames’ is 40 years old!

Today’s “must” movie is “WarGames” with Matthew Broderick and yesterday, June 3, 2023, was the 40th anniversary of its premiere. “WarGames” is Broderick’s second film (after the completely underrated “Max Dugan Returns”) and he’s just as good in this one as any that would follow … and that would include the seminal teenage classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

In “WarGames,” you get a computer that is reachable from a teen’s home; it talks; and then it nearly starts World War III all by itself through AI (artificial intelligence) … and all in 1983, long before the internet as we know it today and the simple conveniences brought about by technology in the 40 years since (or the Russian hacker teams trying to do the same thing today).

Broderick is a young genius who’s bored at school and enjoys showing off his intelligence by changing grades in his school’s computer and then finding his way into a “game company” and its new games. Of course, it’s not a game company … it is the computer that controls all the nuclear warheads in the U.S. arsenal.

Again of course, Broderick has to outwit the feds; break out of jail inside the most secure of U.S. facilities that is responsible for launching nuclear-tipped rockets; and then save the world when all the adults can do is stand around and look stupid.

Well, “WarGames” isn’t your typical “kid knows more than everyone else” film. Broderick’s character is actually realistic and he plays it just perfectly.

You won’t have any trouble finding “WarGames,” so go get it! You won’t be disappointed. I guarantee it!
