Today’s “must” movie is “Kelly’s Heroes” from 1970 with Clint Eastwood. “Kelly’s Heroes” just passed its 53rd anniversary on June 23, 2023, and I’m disappointed that I didn’t post this suggestion on the anniversary date.
Here is one of my all-time favorite films and it co-stars Don Rickles as well as Donald Sutherland as World War II’s only hippie! “Kelly’s Heroes” is a war movie, but it also is a caper flick with a side of comedy tossed in with it.
“Kelly’s Heroes” was not a favorite with its star or its director (both found many things wrong, including the name) and it has been called the last film where Eastwood did not have creative veto. Yet, I love it and list it No. 9 in my Top 10 list of favorite films.
The story of “Kelly’s Heroes” is that you get Eastwood as “Kelly,” a private who was an officer but got demoted when he was ordered to take the wrong hill and he attacked a U.S. position. Well, Eastwood hatches a plan to rob a bank of gold, with the key being the bank is behind enemy lines … and that would be the perfect crime.
Unfortunately, from a critical point of view, the film is spoiled trying to be too many things. As a somewhat comedy to rob a bank of Nazi gold, it would have been OK. However, filmmakers spoiled “Kelly’s Heroes” by having Eastwood being an anti-hero (he’s a disgraced officer and an anti-hero was mandatory back then) and making too much of the comedy instead of just letting it occur organically with making the movie.
You shouldn’t have much trouble finding “Kelly’s Heroes.” So, check it out today! You won’t be disappointed. I guarantee it!
