Today’s “must” movie is “Bobby Deerfield” with Al Pacino. “Bobby Deerfield” is a “must” because you “must” not see it. I’m not kidding, the stench remains on this stinker even 45 years after its premiere.
“Bobby Deerfield” is the story of a distant, aloof race car driver (Pacino) who is pulled out of his emotional shell by a beautiful woman who has a secret. Well, the secret isn’t so secret if you have half a mind (she’s dying of cancer) and what happens in the film comes as absolutely no surprise.
The surprise is that with “Bobby Deerfield,” the late director Sydney Pollack, Pacino and the usually wonderful Marthe Keller give a big serving of dreck with this one. The direction is bad, the acting worse and only the scenes at the time of Formula One racing offer any visual treat.
“Bobby Deerfield” is the only film I ever saw at a theater where someone stood up during the credits and booed loudly. Before re-watching “Bobby Deerfield” again, I had had fond memories of the film. After re-watching it, I had no idea why I found it interesting in the first place.
I don’t even know if you can find “Bobby Deerfield” and I’m not going to research it for you. Still, check it out today! You will be disappointed. I guarantee it!
