Today’s “must” movie is “Beach Party” with Frankie (Avalon) and Annette (Funicello). “Beach Party” is the signature film at the start of the surfing craze in California in the early 1960s. It was vilified by all real surfers as a “gremmie” or a “hodad,” but it became for better or worse, the best-known and iconic face of surfing.
With “Beach Party,” you get a bunch of teenagers headed out to spend the summer on “the beach.” After surfing and dancing on the beach, they go to a teen-hangout bar where they drink beer and eat pie (yes, real pie … not what you believed I was inferring – although the filmmakers might have been getting a little joke in back in those conservative days). Of course, it’s the 1960s … teens at a bar getting snockered on beer. Well, back then they could do that in a bar.
In any case, a university professor is making a study of the habits of the beach-dwelling teens and, of course, gets involved with Annette; which ticks off Frankie; and even gets into a brawl with a motorcycle gang (“Eric von Zipper” and his “army of stupids”). Whew! Plus, you get a plane landing and taking off from the beach.
One of the coolest moments in “Beach Party” is when the late Dick Dale and his Del-Tones performed (I believe it was spelled “Del Tones” without the hyphen for the movie). Finally, also check out the sequel from 1987 called “Back to the Beach” with Frankie and Annette and Dick Dale, too.
You might have a little trouble finding “Beach Party,” but it will be worth it. I guarantee it!
