Today’s “must” movie is “Used Cars.” After recommending “Porky’s,” it was time to recommend a really raunchy R-rated comedy and “Used Cars” fills the bill to a (Model)-T! Here is an underappreciated comedy from 1980 that just leaves you on the floor.
Former Disney youth star Kurt Russell is the main character in “Used Cars” and he’s looking to scam money fast so he can buy himself a seat on the local political scene – nothing like stepping “up” from used car salesman to crooked politician, huh?
However, it’s the story in “Used Cars” of twin brothers operating separate lots literally across the street from each other that allows the comedy to reign. Hey, you get TV’s “Lennie” and “Squiggy” as tech-nerds who break into live TV (a football game and a speech by President Carter – remember, the film is from 1980) with hilarious results.
You also get with “Used Cars” another salesman who has a hyper-superstition about red cars that plays prominently in the TV football scene as well as the end of the film (he also detonates a Mercedes from the competition’s lot during the football-interrupted sequence).
Wow! You simply can’t ask for any more from “Used Cars,” but you get it with urination by a dog.
OK, so that one isn’t for everyone’s taste.
So, find “Used Cars” … there’s absolutely no question: You’ll enjoy it. I guarantee it!
