Boo! We’re at the finish line of Halloween 2023! Today is Oct. 31, and there’s only one film you need to watch: “Halloween” from 1978. Yes, “Halloween” is the John Carpenter classic starring “Scream Queen-to-be” Jamie Lee Curtis. It is simply the best-ever movie for the Halloween season, although Wes Craven’s “Scream” makes it a photo-finish!
With “Halloween,” you meet legendary cinema killer-bad guy: “Michael Myers.” Better yet, you get the definitive “slasher” flick. Best yet, you get Jamie Lee!
“Halloween” has all the stereotypes-to-be in the slasher genre: the killer appears and disappears in the blink of an eye; you have high school students as the victims; you have a bunch of adults who need their collective heads examined; and you get actual thrills without gut-churning special effects (yes, there is gore, but not the tidal wave the next 15 years of special effects would bring).
In “Halloween,” you get a youngster who offs his sister and then he’s sent to the bobby hatch! Bounce forward 15 years for the bulk of the film and, well, he’s grown up, obviously pissed off and escapes to begin the bloody escapade that is called “Halloween.” He focuses on Curtis and manages to do unpleasantness on her friends and tries to make puree of her, too.
Carpenter made “Halloween” on a budget of $325,000 and that’s less than many supporting actors get in cinema today. Heck, Curtis had to buy her own wardrobe for the film and spent $100 at JC Penney.
You won’t have any trouble finding “Halloween” to watch today on Halloween, from basic cable, to movie networks to streaming to your DVD collection. So, find “Halloween” and I guarantee you will enjoy it!
