Today’s “must” movie is “Runaway Jury” with a stellar cast that includes Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, John Cusack and Rachel Weisz – and let’s not forget Jeremy Piven. “Runaway Jury” offers a great story from the best-selling novel by John Grisham and it highlights some of Hollywood’s best.
“Runaway Jury” is the courtroom drama of a civil lawsuit brought by a woman whose husband was gunned down in a mass-slaying at his office. Hoffman is representing her; Hackman is the jury-tampering hired-gun for the defendants; and Cusack’s on the jury and he and Weisz are looking to sell the verdict to either side … or are they?
You’ll find that Hackman does the best job in “Runaway Jury” and that Hoffman, while his usual energetic self, comes up a bit short in his effort (no pun intended about the 5-foot-5 actor). Yet, even coming up short is better from Hoffman than 95-percent of other actors’ best efforts. Finally, Cusack and Weisz offer top-shelf efforts with their impressive talent.
The story of “Runaway Jury” is a little different from the novel because it is the gun industry, not the tobacco folks, who are being sued. After that, the key points of the novel are translated pretty well into the streamlining that’s necessary in bringing any novel to the big screen. Naturally, filmmakers had to change one thing: the title. The movie is “Runaway Jury,” while the novel is “The Runaway Jury.” Sigh.
You shouldn’t have any trouble finding “Runaway Jury.” You’ll enjoy it. I guarantee it!
