Today’s ‘must see’ movie: ‘Ice Station Zebra’ was Howard Hughes’ favorite

Today’s “must” movie is “Ice Station Zebra” with Rock Hudson. Here is what was Howard Hughes’ favorite film – and he bought a TV station in Las Vegas just so he could watch it any time he so desired (remember, all those years ago there wasn’t VHS or DVD, much less streaming).

“Ice Station Zebra” is an espionage film about a U.S. submarine’s trip to the Arctic. It was directed by legendary director John Sturges, although he pretty much did a so-so job with this one. It stars Hudson, who also does a so-so job, but stands out amid the mediocrity of the film. You also get Ernest Borgnine, Patrick McGoohan and former football great Jim Brown in the film.

In short, a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine is sent on a rescue mission to the Arctic. Although supposedly sent to help scientists in need, it’s an espionage mission with spies and a squad of U.S. Marines on board. Finally, the Russians arrive and we’ve got a Cold War stand off on ice.

Whew! A big-screen adventure that could have been much, much better.

Sturges spent too much time on the minutiae of silly things such as how they recovered data dropped from a satellite that accidentally lands in the Arctic or how a submarine operates under the Arctic ice. If he had spent more time on developing the characters, “Ice Station Zebra” could have been great.

Still, the “Ice Station Zebra” is worth your time simply because Hughes found it so interesting that he would call up the TV station and have them back up the film so he could re-watch a scene!

Like many of my recommendation, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding “Ice Station Zebra.” I have no doubt that you might enjoy it. I guarantee it!
