Today’s “must” movie is next in my annual Christmas(time) countdown of flicks. Today, Dec. 19, 2023, finds us with “Trading Places,” which, like yesterday’s “Die Hard” isn’t a “conventional” Christmas movie. Although it begins at Christmas, “Trading Places’” focus is more on the new year, but I categorize it as a Christmas(time) flick because of the holiday gift of Jamie Lee Curtis.
“Trading Places” is the story of a rich man and a poor man (now legendary comedians Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy) whose lives are turned upside down through a bet by the even richer men who make a $1 bet over the outcomes of ruining one man’s life, while making the other appear wealthy.
Of course, you get to see quite a bit of Jamie Lee and with “Trading Places” she was off-and-running away from being a horror “Scream Queen” to full-fledged stardom in Hollyweird.
Although the Christmas season is fundamental to the film, it is less of a driving force than you’ll find in the rest of the films I’ll recommend you watch through this coming Christmas Day.
Of course, in “Trading Places,” Aykroyd and Murphy overcome their tormentors (although Aykroyd is tormented much more than Murphy, but he does wind up with Jamie Lee) and win at the end and you’ll enjoy this seasonal favorite … OK, well, this somewhat of a seasonal favorite.
In any case, you won’t have any trouble finding “Trading Places,” just as you won’t have any trouble finding any of the other Christmas(time) flicks that I recommend. And, just like all the others, you’ll totally enjoy the classic comedy “Trading Places” again and again and, well you get it and I guarantee it!
