Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, you need to watch “All That Jazz” from 1979 by legendary director/choreographer Bob Fosse. It has everything from song-and-dance to drama to bits of comedy. “All That Jazz” was nominated for nine Oscars and won four, but no wins (just nominations) for the lead actor or director.
However, “All That Jazz” is pretty much Fosse autobiography on film. It’s his story; it is his life; and he accurately predicted his death by a heart attack (that actually coming eight years after the premiere of “All That Jazz”). Fosse was a stupendous, polarizing talent and, in 1973, was the first to win “best director” in the same year for an Oscar, Tony and Emmy award.
For “All That Jazz,” Roy “Jaws” Scheider plays “Joe Gideon” as the central figure who is starting production of a Broadway show as well as directing what would be an Oscar-winning movie. At the same time, he was dealing with family matters, drinking heavily and relying on amphetamines to maintain his signature phrase of, “It’s Showtime!”
You get an outstanding supporting cast with Ben Vereen, Cliff Gorman, a young John Lithgow and wonderful work by Ann Reinking, who was Fosse’s love interest in real life, too. All in all, with Fosse’s choreography and direction and a can’t-miss cast, you need to watch “All That Jazz.”
The film is an easy one to find and you’ll enjoy it, even with its dark side … I guarantee it!
