It’s movie time! ‘Nighthawks’ brings you an anti-terror ‘buddy’ film

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Nighthawks” with Sylvester Stallone and Billy Dee Williams. Here’s a solid action film that was a buddy-vehicle for Stallone and Williams, but it is another actor who does the best job.

“Nighthawks” is about a couple of New York City detectives who specialize in work on the nighttime streets. They are put on what was then a new task force to become anti-terrorism experts – remember, the film was released in 1981 and terrorism hadn’t dropped off too much from Black September’s reign in the 1970s. Stallone and Williams complement each other well in this one as the undercover cops.

Coming to New York in “Nighthawks” is a terrorist with no affiliation because he “botched” a bombing in London. Ha! How does a terrorist “botch” a bombing? Anyway, you get to meet “Wulfgar” because he wants to make a splash in NYC and get back onto the world terrorism market.

“Wulfgar” is played to perfection by Rutger Hauer, who would go on to much bigger fame a year after “Nighthawks” as “Roy Batty” in the sci-fi classic “Blade Runner.” Hauer, who was in his first U.S. film with “Nighthawks,” does a wonderful job of being a really, really bad guy.

You won’t find much in the supporting cast outside a small part for Lindsay Wagner, who was TV’s “The Bionic Woman,” and Persis Khambatta as “Wulfgar’s” deadly sidekick, but with two headliners and Hauer, there obviously wasn’t much room for a big supporting cast.

Find “Nighthawks” and you’ll enjoy it, especially Hauer’s effort … I guarantee it!
